On Being |
"You're just being silly." "Stop being so stubborn!" "Do you realize
you're being difficult right now?" There are some words we hear several times
in a day. Occasionally, though, the profound nature of a word hits you square between
the eyes. Today's word is "being." What are you being today? Who or what decides what we are being each day? Or is it external forces that shape our behavior, thoughts and attitudes? Sometimes it's easy to think that if the day doesn't start just right, it has negatively influenced the entire rest of the hours we'll be awake. Like, he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Or, I missed the bus and my day went downhill from there. Sometimes we don't even need a current event as an excuse for how we're being. Something from the past or the future might be the scapegoat. Haven't you ever experienced a time when you are remembering, or perhaps obsessing, over something that happened a week, a month, even years ago? It colored your day, made you see things differently than you might have otherwise. For example, if I'm dreading an upcoming surgical procedure, anything and everything is colored by a depressing shade of gray. On the other hand, if I am remembering my honeymoon one day, it seems like I have a smile on my face no matter what tasks I'm doing. Apart from that, I marvel that I am being. I am a being who is in the state of being. I am being a being. What a marvelous word, being. It not only describes "me" but it also describes "life." What other word has such power? Any living creature or plant is a being. Even something we don't understand (like aliens or elves or angels) could be called a being - so it's an all-purpose term while still conveying a sense of dignity. No matter what a being is doing, whether its moving, dancing, flying, or just quietly growing, it is being. So if you are being, what are you being? Well, my answer would probably be, "I am just being me." What is that? Is that an answer? What kind of person are you deep down inside? I am guessing that everybody thinks they are wonderful, kind human beings (there's that word again) - but are you? And if you are deep down inside, does it come out in everything you do? Are you still being you? Not trying to put anyone on the spot here... just being myself. |
